A man who attacked his fellow villager and dealt him several lashes with a piece of wood before robbing him has been remanded to jail.
The man, Bharrat Sham, called Ramjeet, 31, of Betsy Ground East Canje, Berbice, appeared on Friday, before Magistrate Marissa Mittleholzer at the Albion Magistrate’s Court on a charge of Robbery with violence.
He is accused of robbing Lakeram Samaroo, a cane cutter, of $3,000 and a cell phone, in the process using personal violence against Samaroo. This occurred on May 22 at Betsy ground, Canje.
Prosecutor Sergeant Orin Joseph told the court that the two men are known to each other, but are not on speaking terms. Sham had threatened the accused before and was warned.
Around 23:50 hrs on the day in question Samaroo was on his way to the shop when he was attacked by Sham who was armed with a piece of wood. He first dealt the man a lash on his foot and after he fell, continued to lash him on his head and other parts of his body. The bandit them pushed his hands in Samaroo’s pocked and relieved him of the money and phone and made good his escape.
The man was picked up and rushed to the New Amsterdam hospital where he was admitted for treatment.
The matter was reported and the convict who is known to the authorities was arrested and charged. He was remanded to jail until June 16 when the matter will continue in the Reliance Magistrate’s Court.
