An army man accused of robbing a 13-year-old girl of her cell phone, was remanded to prison yesterday when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Niassi Jones, 18, of 118 Mitchel Street, is alleged to have armed himself with a bottle to rob 13-year-old Jordana McKenzie while she was on her way home on May 23, at Kitty.
Jones who was unrepresented by a lawyer stood handcuffed in the prisoner’s dock. He denied the charge of armed robbery.
According to Prosecutor Neville Jeffers, the schoolgirl was on her way home when she was attacked by the defendant and another person. Jeffers told the court that the defendant held a bottle in his hand and threatened the young girl. He later got away with her mobile device.
The schoolgirl was not present for the court hearing however, her step father appeared on her behalf.
Jones was later refused bail by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan who assigned the matter to be recalled again on June 2.
The Magistrate then instructed that the defendant be placed in the care and custody of his captain who was present in court.
