Six years of anxiety came to a shocking end yesterday for Champa Seonarine.
The woman, who had long suspected that something terrible had befallen her daughter Babita Sarjou, had her worst fears realized yesterday.
After learning that the skeletal remains of a human, suspected to be that of her daughter, was found buried in a shallow grave at the back of a yard at Seaforth Street, Kitty, a devastated and teary-eyed Champa Seonarine turned up at the scene to get a glimpse of what was happening.
When she arrived at the scene, the woman broke down in front of the property, where her daughter once lived with her husband Anand Narine—the man who is now being accused of killing her.
While the police will have to wait on the results of DNA tests to make a positive identification, Seonarine is convinced that the skeletal remains found in the “three-feet deep” grave are that of her daughter, who went missing in 2010.
Shortly after Babita Sarjou disappeared, her mother was informed through the grape vine that her estranged husband had killed her and buried her body in his yard. This information was passed onto the police since then but nothing was done at that time.
“Babita is gone. It is almost six years since she went missing. My Daughter didn’t deserve this. If he (her husband) knew they couldn’t live together, he should have left her, he didn’t have to kill her,” a visually distraught Seonarine said.
Fighting to hold back tears, the woman cried, “I got justice.”
“I don’t know how someone can do this. I wish if they can bring back hanging in Guyana because it is a waste of time and money to keep them in prison. Once you admit what you did, you need to be hanged,” she cried.
The young mother vanished six years ago after telling her mother that she would be meeting with her estranged husband and four-year-old son at the Kitty Seawall to view the annual Diwali motorcade.
Sarjou had informed her mother that she would meet with the duo after leaving work around 17:30 hrs on November 04, 2010. She had not been seen or heard from until yesterday when human remains believed to be that of her were found.
When questioned yesterday about the relationship Sarjou shared with her husband, Seonarine said that her daughter moved out from her matrimonial home several times because of physical and mental abuse.
“The third time she moved, I called Anand mother to see if we can talk to them because they are young people. His mother turned and tell me that her son had an accident and his head ain’t too good,” Seonarine said.
According to Seonarine, when her daughter couldn’t take it anymore, she moved back to her Timehri home and had been living separately from her husband for almost a year until she disappeared.
There were Facebook messages where Anand Narine had reportedly threatened to kill his wife, Babita.
Just before she went missing, Narine was charged for distributing nude pictures of her at her workplace, BK International.
Meanwhile, at the scene yesterday, neighbours were all in denial that Anand Narine- the “quietest” person in the village could murder someone.
Before the body was located, one neighbour was seen crying when she saw the police escorting Narine to the scene in handcuffs and shackle.
“How can they do this to him? He didn’t kill anyone. He told me he didn’t do anything to harm her but look how the police got him like if he is some monster,” the woman said.
When police found the remains, neighbours were still supportive of Narine. They were convinced that someone was trying to frame him.
