Dear Editor;
I write with concern at the utter disregard for the wellbeing of our vendors who have been offering a service to the public at large.
The removal of vendors from Stabroek Square is long overdue, but with no vision for them to continue to ply their trade by the Mayor and City Council exposes the said Council to lack of foresight and cluelessness as to how this matter must be handled.
I sympathize with every suffering vendor and I call on the City fathers/mother to come up with concrete viable plans to ensure that our vendors continue to earn a daily bread for themselves and family.
If these vendors were paying dues to the Council then the Council becomes culpable and must take responsibility for what now exist. To accept rates and taxes from these vendors and shop owners lends fuel to the fire. To approve building plans makes the Council party to the entire fiasco that exists.
When this same exercise was being executed by past regime/s there was wholesale condemnation but now worse is being perpetuated against the honest working people of our country.
Structures are been demolished while the owners sleep. Kudos must be given to the authorities for bringing to the city the “new look” but it should and must be done with a firm plan to facilitate/accommodate the vendors in a place that they can continue to pay their rent, look after their children and meet the demands of the daily expenses.
