Dear Editor,
Thanks for assisting me with my proposal, to the public and government on Fire Sprinklers being mandatory for commercial buildings. As we see the development of more buildings, three (3) stories and more being constructed, we need to think about fire safety protection for its occupants. The Fire Service department has the authority of checking buildings and issue the fire permits, so that the buildings are safe in the event that there’s a fire. Our fire codes and laws are out dated and the fire department has to work by these codes and laws. The fire codes of Guyana say that night clubs must have Fire Sprinklers systems installed. I know of one (1) night club in Guyana that has Fire Sprinklers installed. How did all the other night clubs get their fire permits to build and operate?
We all support and welcome the development of our nation, but do we just let things just slide or sweep the rules, codes and laws of our country under the carpet. By doing this does it make our nation a greater one? What does it portray about the level of safety business owners have for the occupants? The Marriott hotel has fire sprinklers installed, not because it’s a 5 star hotel but because the safety of its occupants is the highest concern for them, even the loading dock has fire sprinklers installed, also Sharon’s Mall on king street has fire sprinklers installed to provide safety for it’s occupants.
Other hotels don’t provide this standard of safety for its occupants. Why is it that government is not updated with the fire codes and lift the safety standards of our country? Is it that government does not care about the safety of our citizens?
The cost to install fire sprinklers is about the same as tiling the building’s flooring. Can you put a price on safety, is there a price on lives being saved, building owners spend millions of dollars on the mere buildings but to invest in the safety of the building and its occupants, owners think it unnecessary to take these safety measures.
Is it about fancy buildings and no safe standards for the building or its occupants? Government must take these simple safety standards into consideration and update our laws. I am willing to assist my country and its government to make Fire Sprinklers mandatory for commercial buildings. I have submitted my proposal to the past government and all they did was reply with a letter saying they will look into it. Why is it that government, past and present, do not consider new ideas and proposals in bettering our country?
Is it because i am of no political status or back ground or because i am not a big financial provider for the country, that my proposal is not being considered? Mr. President, please consider and make Fire Sprinklers mandatory for commercial buildings, three stories and over. Let us not wait until there are lives lost to implement these laws. We see with the ABC countries there is safety at the top of their list, this is because of in the past many lives and buildings where lost to fire. Let us also put our country’s safety at the top of our list of making Guyana better.
As I was composing this letter i heard about the fire at the Gafoor complex and bond. I once went into the Gafoor complex and bond and i asked to speak to someone in charge, that i am from Fire Sprinklers and Safety Equipment Services, and was inquiring if they were interested in installing Fire Sprinklers to the building, i was told no. Fire sprinklers are 99% effective in extenuating a fire. I have approached many buildings when in construction, and enquire if the buildings required or needed fire sprinklers and they all said no. Please Mr. President don’t say no to Fire Sprinklers.
