Sarwan, Simmons expected to feature
The Region Six Jubilee Committee and Berbice Cricket Board in collaboration with MMR Promotions have launched their 50th Independence Anniversary T20 Cricket Cup. The launching was done on Wednesday last in the Regional Health Service Board Room, Fort Canje.
The activity which will feature four teams is scheduled for Saturday May 21st at the Albion Community Centre with the finals expected to be played under lights. The competing teams have been branded with names of National Symbols and will feature a number of guest players.
The teams are Upper Corentyne/Port Mourant Jubilee Titans which will have former West Indies Captain Ramnaresh Sarwan in the lineup; Central Corentyne (Rose Hall Town, Albion) Victoria Royals which will include West Indies Under-19 player Kemo Paul; New Amsterdam Canje/Canje Pheasants that will see West Indies Under-19 winning World Cup Captain Shimron Hetmyer included while the West Berbice Jaguars is expected include West Indies Under-19 player, Tevin Imlach.
It is anticipated that West Indies T20 star Lendl Simmons and the locally based players of the Guyana CPL squad have been given the all clear to participate. Efforts are also being made to contact Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Rayad Emrit.
The day’s activity which is scheduled to bowl off at 09:00hrs will also feature two softball matches. A Berbice Legend’s X1 will take on their counterparts from Demerara while a Female Berbice team featuring West Indies World T20 stars Tremayne Smartt and Shemaine Campbell will oppose their Demerara counterparts.
A number of sponsors are already on board including Corona Beer, Nand Persaud and Company Limited, Associated Construction Services, Memorex Enterprise and A. Ally and Sons among others.
Former National Player Kevin Darlington has also pledged US$400.00 which will be distributed on the spot to persons taking catches on the day. Over $1M in prizes and other incentives are up for grabs with each participating team receiving $100,000 appearance fee.
A winner take all prize of $300,000 is at stake while $50,000 will be given to top individual players including the man of the finals and player of the tournament. Spectators will not be left out as there are a number of gate prizes including a refrigerator, gas stove and washing machine.
Among those at the launch were BCB Secretary Angela Haniff, Jubilee Coordinator Maxine Williams, PRO Riaz Hussein, Organiser Stephen Latcha and Top Brandz representative Daniel Azar.
