A man, who was caught in the act when he and two others tried to break into a business place and was chopped and hospitalized, has now been jailed for his indiscretion.
Anthony Gobin, called “Gobind”, 18, a labourer and a well known character of Hopetown, West Coast Berbice, was on Friday sentenced to 12 months in jail by Magistrate Rhondel Weaver at the completion of his trial in the Weldaad Magistrate’s Court.
Prosecutor Corporal Rocquel Mars stated that on December 18, last, Intiaz Khan, a butcher of Lot 23 Bush Lot, West Coast Berbice, had secured his premises and was at home with his family. About 20:30 hours the butcher had cause to investigate an unusual sound coming from a section of the upper flat of their two-storied building.
He confronted Gobin who along with two others was trying to break into his home. Gobin reportedly removed the window pane and unlawfully entered the house through the very window.
Khan and Gobin ended in a scuffle during which time Gobin was chopped even as his accomplices made their escape. He was taken to the Fort Wellington Hospital and later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
The other two men were taken into custody during the time Gobin was hospitalized in a critical condition in the Georgetown Public Hospital.
The other two men, who were subsequently released on bail, disappeared. Gobin was charged after he was released from hospital.
During the trial he denied being at the scene of the robbery and told the court that he was by his girlfriend when he was attacked by some boys.
However, he could not identify his girlfriend or the boys involved in the matter.
