The Academic Working Group of the National Commemoration Commission yesterday launched
Guyana’s first Digital Tent as part of Guyana’s Golden Jubilee celebrations.
The launch was held in the conference room of the Guyana National Library. On hand to begin proceedings was Archivist of National Archives (Guyana) Mrs. Nadia Carter.
She said that this launch was a historic occasion as Guyanese can now access information digitally through the first ever Digital Tent.
Digital Tent is a website launched by the Academic Working Group that was developed by Dr. Vibert Cambridge, a professor at the Ohio University and Scripps College of Communication.
Director of Culture in the Department of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. James Rose, gave a brief overview of Digital Tent stating that its primary purpose is to provide links to materials about Guyanese history, national heritage and the experiences of Guyanese people that were produced by Guyanese.
Dr. Rose also mentioned that Guyanese can now research their genealogy via the immigration database that can be found on the Digital Tent website. He noted that this project was part of an attempt to help Guyana’s Libraries and Archives keep up with the digital age.
Dr. Rose indicated that the Academic Working Group was tasked with creating a Literary Festival and various events as part of Guyana’s Jubilee celebrations.
He said that a Creative writing competition and a “Poetry Slang” competition were already completed and stated that there would be an Award Ceremony some time at the end of May.
Other notable events he mentioned were the Around Guyana in Fifty Days initiative which is currently ongoing; this project involves writers and artists going to 50 different communities around Guyana and
‘interfacing” with the residents, another he stated were playwriting workshops to be held in the three counties of Guyana; Demerara, Berbice and Essequibo.
Culminating the literary events he posited would be a National Symposium that would see academics from Guyana and the Diaspora making presentations. He concluded that these events are an embodiment of the Jubilee theme; Reflect, Celebrate and Inspire.
An overview of the Digital Tent project was given by Dr. Vibert Cambridge, a member of the Diaspora Academic Working Group. He stated that six students from the USA worked along with him to create and gather the necessary information needed for the Digital Tent.
He said that as they worked, they set out to “reflect, celebrate and inspire.”
He stated that he was “very proud and grateful to be a part of this.”
Minister within the Ministry of Education Mrs. Nicolette Henry was present at the launching of the Digital Tent, and give a brief speech in which she congratulated the Academic Working Group and spoke about the importance of this venture.
