Dear Editor,
I refer to a letter in KN, “City Police aren’t doing their job,” by Shanta Singh. This citizen has said everything in her letter that speaks to the Police and the Police chief. Also, it is exactly what I wanted to write myself since I just got back from a vacation in March 2016. My daughter was one of those victims, not born in Guyana but loves the country and the people. Robbed right in front of all the vendors around the Stabroek area and all you could hear is ‘look he, look he’ and no one wanted to help. She was traumatized and shocked at this behavior. We visit very often but it will be a long time before we ever come back. I have heard from many visitors who are also staying away also because of the crime.
Another very important issue is the corruption by the traffic police. On the guise of random checking, they like to pull over any vehicle when a suitcase is visible. No infraction of the law to warrant a ticket but out comes ‘ you have anything for the boys, they are thirsty’. This has happened to us on several occasions when entering the city from the airport. A Police in US or Canada would have his uniform removed for this sort of behavior. This is what visitors coming in for the Jubilee will have for a welcome?? I believe the police also have their cohorts at the airport who supply them with information.
I have read this paper and other publications and in my opinion there should be strict requirements, more training, and education when hiring policemen. They should also be charged and disciplined when they ask for bribes from the citizens and visitors.
Bibi Philips.
