A man who was described as a serial drug dealer after admitting that he was caught over six times dealing drugs, will be off the road for the next five years.
The man Roger English, 54, a pork knocker of Amelia’s Ward, Linden, was on Tuesday sentenced to five years in jail and fined a total of $8.8 million by Magistrate Rhondell Weaver, yesterday. The man appeared before her in the Blairmont Magistrate’s Court on a charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
On Sunday January 31, last, at Fort Wellington, West Coast Berbice, he had in his possession 5.39 kilograms of compressed marijuana.
English, the driver and a passenger, were in the vehicle HB 9856 operated by Sheriff Taxi Service when it was intercepted.
On the day in question the police at Fort Wellington, acting on information about 15:00hrs were conducting stop and search of motor vehicles in front of Fort Wellington Police Station. In the trunk of the car were a black haversack and a black and red travelling bag containing six parcels wrapped in black plastic bags containing leaves, seeds and stems of cannabis.
The three occupants were arrested and taken into custody. The driver and the other man were subsequently released.
English had initially denied that the cannabis belonged to him, but subsequently confessed that it was his. However in court he again denied, thus, the matter went to trial.
Investigations revealed that the man and his girl friend were recently nabbed at a police road block at Weldaad, not too long ago. English was freed on that charge due to some technicalities.
He admitted that he has been in and out of court on a number of occasions on drug related charges. He was released about two years ago on his latest conviction.
The matter was prosecuted by Sergeant Althea Solomon and Corporal Rochelle Mars.
