The death of a five-month-old baby boy, hours after he was struck in his stroller by a sand truck on Wednesday afternoon, has rocked the East Coast Demerara community of Belmont, Mahaica.
The baby, Randy Williams, was being taken for his usual afternoon push in his stroller along Market Dam by his nine-year-old cousin when the truck, driven by a neighbour, slammed into them a few metres from their home. While the cousin escaped unhurt, a part of the truck hit the baby, inflicting severe injuries that subsequently resulted in his death.
According to the police, their initial investigations have revealed that around 17:00 hours on Wednesday the driver of the motor lorry was proceeding along an access road at Belmont, when it is alleged that an older relative who was pushing Randy Williams in a stroller attempted to cross the road and the vehicle collided with the stroller.
Williams was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), while the driver of the motor lorry, GJJ 4896, is in police custody assisting with the investigations.
When this newspaper visited the grieving family’s home yesterday, villagers, including the truck driver’s father were gathered, reflecting on what transpired.
The dead child’s cousin recalled that while pushing the stroller, he saw the truck coming and he pulled into the corner onto the parapet.
“A boy tell de truck to wait…but I hear de truck move and it hit de pram. I holler for me grandmother and I tek de baby out and run,” Williams’ nine-year-old cousin told this newspaper.
His uncle, Vibert, who was at home when the incident occurred, stated that he was sitting in the yard when he saw his mother (the dead child’s grandmother) holding her head and screaming at the top of her voice.
“I see me lil nephew (nine year old) coming with de baby in he hand and I tek de baby from he,” Vibert Williams told this newspaper. He said that the baby was not breathing.
“I hold he and shake he and breathe in he mouth and he catch he self,” Williams added.
Nevertheless, the baby was rushed to the Mahaicony Hospital where he received initial treatment, but his injuries required advanced medical attention and he was transferred to the main health facility, the GPHC, where he later succumbed.
