Guyana’s ever growing road fatality list had a new addition on Tuesday afternoon after a vagrant was crushed by a “container truck” at the junction of Sheriff and Garnett Streets.
A frequent presence on the Sheriff Street area, the now deceased man was reportedly intoxicated and was walking north along Sheriff Street about 15:50hrs when the accident occurred. One person said that he would be seen frequenting the area but no one could identify him.
Kaieteur News understands that he reportedly dropped a bag containing a loaf of bread and a bottle of soda in the street.
The bottle of drink rolled under the container of the then stationary truck and he reportedly went after the drink. At this point eyewitnesses say that the traffic light changed to green and the truck pulled off while he was still under the container.
Kaieteur News understands that the man was crushed and dragged a short distance. He was killed instantly. Onlookers said that they shouted and tried to notify the driver who braked frantically but by then it was too late.
The driver was escorted to the police station and is in custody assisting with investigations.
