Dear Editor,
Please publish the attached poem Native Son that I wrote in honor of Special Constable Akeem Hyles, who drowned while carrying out an operation to halt illegal mining at Kaieteur National Park.
Native Son
Akeem Hyles
flows through
Guyana’s vital vein
into her pulsing heart
and is one
with our precious motherland
that others monger so cheaply.
Oh Akeem. Oh Akeem.
You could have been
so many things.
Oh young son.
Oh brother.
Dear patriot,
martyr – you defend
our land for our
children struggling
to be born.
I will look for you
on our mudflat,
between the river
and land,
that single tree
facing the tide.
