Assuria Life (GY) Inc. has stepped on board the “Adopt a Shelter/Adopt a Bin” initiative started by the Pyramid Shelter, Outdoor and Branding Company. It became the most recent corporation to get on the Bus Shed
project, joining other private sector companies such as the Green Acres School Group, Xtra Energy, Farfan & Mendes, Guyana Lottery Company and Quick Access Business Services.
Present at the Opening and Ribbon Cutting ceremony of the shed on Wednesday, was General Manager of Assuria, Yogindra Arjune, Mayor and City Council Deputy Town Clerk, Sharon Harry-Munroe and Debra Lewis, along with Kwame Mentore of Pyramid.
Mentore said that it is Pyramid’s goal for at least 20 bus sheds to be erected at various locations in Georgetown by May 26, for the Jubilee celebrations.
He called for private companies, Government Ministries and private donors to adopt or sponsor more shelters and bins, as the private and public sectors continue to work together on the cleaning and beautification of Guyana.
He added that the bus sheds come equipped with lights and USB ports so that commuters can recharge their phones while waiting for transportation. The lights and USB ports are powered by solar panels as part of the Go Green drive.
And as a further measure to reduce littering each bus shed comes with a branded bin. He appealed to the public to refrain from vandalism of the sheds and to utilise the bins to help keep Guyana clean.
General Manager of Assuria, Yogindra Arjune, was on hand to cut the ribbon. He spoke briefly of Assuria’s plan regarding the bus sheds. Assuria’s adopted bus shed is located on Regent Street oblique to the Guyoil Gas station.
Arjune stated that it is Assuria’s intention to have more bus sheds constructed at locations throughout the city.
Deputy Town Clerk, Sharon Harry-Munroe, spoke on behalf of the Mayor & City Council. She emphasised the M&CC’s delight at being part of the Adopt A Shelter/Adopt A Bin drive as well as the fact that the private sector is now working along with the public sector. She said that when Pyramid approached them about the use of various parapets for the bus sheds M&CC welcomed the idea and fully endorsed the initiative, she further opined that the bus sheds are beneficial and a blessing to the public.
The shelters/bus sheds are 12 feet wide and six feet in depth. They are powered by seven solar panels and take a maximum of seven days to construct. These shelters cost approximately $60,000 monthly to adopt. This shows just how much the private sector is on board the Clean Up Guyana and beautification campaign initiated by the government.
Guyanese can look forward to utilising these sheds at numerous locations in the near future. Three more are due to be erected within the next two weeks. The public can also look forward to seeing more of this project by Pyramid at Guy Expo scheduled for later this year.
