In a surprise pairing, Carlton Beckles has been elected Mayor of Lethem, while 19-year-old Maxine
Ann Welch is the new Deputy Mayor. They were both voted into office by their fellow councillors yesterday.
In interviews with sections of the media, the young leader said that she was taken by complete surprise, but is nevertheless very happy and certain she will not disappoint her fellow councillors.
The young lady also stated that she is aware of the task ahead. However, she is confident due to the support of her colleagues from A Partnership for National Unity/ Alliance for Change (APNU+AFC) side of the fence.
Welch described it as an honour to be elected for such a position. She promised to take her responsibilities very seriously. She is currently employed at the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) as the Administrative Assistant.
Meanwhile, Ganesh Gangadin has been elected Mayor of the town of Corriverton, with Krishand Jaichand as his Deputy Mayor.
The swearing-in ceremony was held at the Corriverton Town Hall, yesterday, by Town Clerk Narendra Nauth Sukham. Gangadin was nominated and elected without opposition.
He is an entrepreneur by profession and is an alumnus from the University of the West Indies (UWI).
It is expected that the new council will soon embark on works to deliver an efficient drainage network, a cleaner environment, the development of recreational parks, a town wide maintenance and rehabilitation of streets and pathways.
His plans are also reported to include installing flood lights at Line Path and Scottsburg playgrounds, as well as fire hydrants around the town and upgrading streets to asphalt surfaces for larger and heavier vehicles.
Sixteen councilors were also elected and sworn in; 14 from the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) and two from the New Dawn Development Association Party.
The councillors are Saif Ivan, Sheik Mahmood, Bebi Rambarran, Pradeep Ketwaroo, Dhan Ramdass, Deonarain Singh, Inderjit Arjoon, Premchan Pooran, Winston Roberts, Everet Harewood, Shameer Alfred, Sabitree Ally, Latchmee Ramnarine- Edward and Jamna Persaud Ghamandi.
Roy Baijnauth was the last Mayor of Corriverton.
