A meeting on Friday between Vice President Moses Nagamootoo and Minister of Public Security, Khemraj Ramjattan, and Australian High Commissioner to Guyana, John Philbeam, discussed the security concerns for the visiting Australia cricket team.
The Australians will be coming to Guyana in June for two One Day internationals.
Mr. Philbeam was named Australian High Commissioner to Guyana in November 2015. He formerly served in many other capacities for the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT).
Assurance was offered to the Australian High Commissioner that security of the team while in Guyana will be of top priority. Ramjattan added that any other specific security request will be fulfilled.
Mr. Philbeam said that the security measures in Guyana are of top standards in the Caribbean. Ramjattan acknowledged this. He said that this was because of the quantity and quality of the training given to ranks of the Guyana security forces.
Nagamootoo and Ramjattan were presented with documents regarding the plans of the Australian Government for dealing with issues regarding border security.
These documents were a summary of the Border Management Programme which Australia has. The plan highlighted some of the issues affecting the border such as terrorism, drugs, corruption in customs, illegal immigration, refugees, etc.
Minister Ramjattan assured Mr. Philbeam that Guyana will continue to work with Australia and international partners to seek areas of collaboration that will enhance the effectiveness of the Security Sector in Guyana and maintain the safety and security of the country’s citizenry and those whom we welcome as guests.
