Police are on the hunt for cattle rustlers who fled, leaving the car and carcass behind after they were confronted by the owner and some residents.
The drama unfolded around 01:00 hrs yesterday at Britannia, West Coast Berbice.
Cattle owner Cheryl Jameer, of Tempe, West Coast Berbice, usually keeps her cows in her backyard. According to reports, her son Kevin Jameer, checked on the animals around 23:00 hrs on Tuesday evening and noticed three of his heifers missing.
The man immediately alerted some villagers who mounted their horses and began scouring the area.
They headed into the backlands and there they noticed the light of a car in the distance. They decided to investigate and upon approaching the vehicle, the men noticed some figures fleeing. When they reached the spot, about a half mile further into the backlands they saw a White Yarris motorcar laden with the carcasses of two cows. There were about eight quarters and two heads in the vehicle. The vehicle was so laden that it got stuck in the dam.
The theory was that the animals were walked to the back dam of the neighbouring village after being stolen and killed. There was evidence of the animals being slaughtered in the area.
The car was then driven down the dam and loaded with the carcasses. However it was too loaded and encountered some difficulties. The rustlers were in the process of rearranging the load in the vehicle when the owner and his posse intercepted. The third cow was not found.
Police were contacted and raced to the scene and scoured the area, but the culprits had escaped.
The cops upon probing further, learnt that the car was rented from a car rental at Good Faith, Mahaicony, by a known individual from Hopetown. He has since disappeared.
