In an effort to combat criminal activities and further strengthen the Guyana Police Force (GPF)’s ‘F’ Division, Commissioner Seelall Persaud yesterday said that the Division will benefit from two additional police stations.
He said that the Division, which is headed by Commander Ravindradat Budhram, is one of the Force’s main targets for the year.
In addition to the police stations, the Division will see an increase of land and water transportation, an increase in human resources, and a floated base deployed to the area.
“Strengthening of “F” Division is one of our targets,” the Commissioner emphasized at the Opening Ceremony of the Police Officers’ Annual Conference held at the Officers’ Mess, Eve Leary yesterday.
This newspaper was also informed that with support from the United States of America Embassy here, the Force is likely to see the deployment of bicycle patrols this year in various parts of the country.
Persaud said too that a Gender-Based Violence Unit will be established at Sub-divisional headquarters.
“We do this because our approach to gender-based violence; that is, sexual offences and domestic violence as well as juvenile offenders, is a multi-agency one, through which the police force collects evidence to prosecute and our partners provide the support.”
Meanwhile, the Force was able to graduate 10,677 persons in the field of Information Technology for free last year. This was done with the help of the Zara group which is based in New York.
“The Zara Group, which is a Diaspora group supporting us, donated three computer labs last year. From that we have graduated the persons. Forty percent graduated from a foundation course, 30 percent from summer classes designed for students in schools, one percent teachers we trained, one percent engineering and last year, we did computer repairs and engineering course,” Persaud stated.
He explained that 26 students who participated in the training programme wrote the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) exam in January and are awaiting results.
To further support the force in its duties to serve and protect, the Zara group has also assisted with cyber security training and is currently working on a project to computerize the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters.
The overseas group is currently assisting the CID with getting investigative software which will be used in enhancing its daily operations.
