An MMC security guard is the country’s latest road fatality after he was killed in an early
morning accident at Rahaman’s Park, East Bank Demerara (EBD) Public Road yesterday.
Juene Carroll Marshall, 60, of Lot 43 Virginia Village, Cane Grove, East Coast Demerara was riding along the thoroughfare around 4:30 hours yesterday when he was struck by a white Toyota Allion (PTT 4701) that was reportedly proceeding at a fast rate. Marshall and his bicycle ended up in a nearby drain.
When Kaieteur News arrived on the scene, the driver who was said to have been tested and found to be over the legal alcohol limit was showing investigating ranks where he struck the now deceased man. He was then handcuffed and taken back to the Ruimveldt Police Station where investigations are continuing.
Marshall was stationed at Container House, Lombard Street but it is not clear where he was heading to at the time of the accident. Fish was present at the scene, indicating that he may have gone to the Meadow Bank Fisheries prior to the accident.
According to paramedics, the man, whose body was partly submerged, had suffered several broken limbs and a broken neck as a result of the impact.
According to a security guard who works in the environs, he heard “a loud slam followed by some tyre screeching”, but took it for nothing.
“I thought that the driver had just driven off the road, but is when the ambulance came, then I realized that a man dead in the gutter,” the guard said.
The victim’s body had been in the drain for at least two hours before it was removed. After examination by paramedics it was collected by undertakers from the Lyken Funeral Home.
Another security guard who spoke on the basis of anonymity said that he heard the impact and realized that a man had been hit and dragged, but upon his investigation he said the body was nowhere to be found until daybreak.
