After the first post was planted last week, the reconstruction of the Umana Yana is
seemingly moving apace.
At the site at Kingston, Georgetown yesterday, the remainder of the posts was already planted; the “ridge-roll” was already in place along with several rafters and rafter straps.
The Umana Yana was razed by fire in September 2014, which according to reports, was of an electrical nature.
The destruction had a heartbreaking effect on citizens especially the Amerindian community.
The first Umana Yana was constructed by a team of about 60 Wai-Wai Amerindians, one of the nine Amerindian tribes of Guyana. It was commissioned by former President Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham in 1972.
Umana Yana means, “Meeting place of the people”.
