Dear Editor,
Permit me to give my views on the security at our largest international airport, Cheddi Jagan International Airport. As a former employee I still have friends that work with the airport that keep me up to date with what is taking place. The security department is managed by someone who has inadequate security experience. They are three ex-military personnel’s employed with the security department and two of them are Senior Non-Commission Officers while the other is a Junior Non Commission Officer and these three persons are wasting their talents as they are only performing basic guard duties.
Employment; The airport has a habit of employing teenagers that are just out of school to perform security duties. They are of the opinion that they will be able to groom them, while promising them overseas training and time off to continue their studies. After employment you’re given the royal run around to get the time that is promised to you to further your study and even to worship your God. Yet they are persons who are granted time off and given special days to go to cricket and things not work related. The persons who are mature and have military/security experience are denied the job because management knows for a fact that they can’t push them around.
Training: A few privilege staff are selected to go on some local sponsor seminars.
Investigations: A few weeks ago a man jump the perimeter fence and went under Dynamic Airline that was about to board for JFK. The monitoring room which is operated by the security department and was manned by two staff that day did not observe what took place. No interrogation was done to the man to find out his true purpose or identity. That is a clear breach of international aviation security standards and the person should have been charged by the police and place before the court.
