An elderly couple was remanded to prison yesterday after they were charged with allegedly trafficking
in five kilograms of marijuana, when they appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
It is alleged that on February 10, at Tabatinga, Central Rupununi, 58-year-old Marcelina Frances and her 66-year-old husband, Wilfred Frances, had the illegal item in their possession for the purpose of trafficking.
The duo pleaded not guilty to the charge and was remanded to prison until March 1, when they will appear in the Lethem Magistrate’s Court. An Attorney for the defendants told the court that his clients are caretakers of the home in which the alleged narcotic was found. He explained that several other persons reside at the residence and the alleged drug could have belonged to anyone.
However, Police Prosecutor, Corporal Deniro Jones told the court that Marcelina and her husband were the only ones at home when the police searched the premises. He said that two black bags containing a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis were found in the back bedroom.
The elderly couple was then cautioned, arrested and taken to the Police Station, where the drugs were tested and weighed in their presence. According to Jones, it proved positive for cannabis sativa (marijuana) and amounted to 5KG. Chief Magistrate McLennan remanded them to prison on the grounds that no special reasons were put forward to satisfy the court.
