Kemol Savory and Kevon Boodie slammed half centuries as East Bank Essequibo defeated South Essequibo by seven wickets to claim the Essequibo Cricket Board (ECB) Busta 40-over title on Sunday at New Opportunity
Corps ground.
Savory and Boodie shared in a second wicket stand of 153 to steady their team chase after South Essequibo who were inserted scored 189 all out in 37.3 overs. East Bank lost the Royden Hendricks, caught off Rovin Dusraj for one before Savory and Boodie came together and almost saw their team to victory in front of a large crowd. Savory struck eight fours and four maximums in a top score of 75, while Boodie slammed seven fours and three sixes in his 67 before they were both dismissed with victory almost certain. Rajiv Balgobin (11*) and Jason Heyliger (10*) saw their team home as they finished on 192-3 in 22.1 overs.
Anthony Adams claimed 2-53 and Dusraj 1-11.
Earlier, Anthony Adams led South Essequibo batting after they were reduced to 96-6. Adams added 85 for the seven-wicket with Akieni Adams who made 25. Anthony thumped three fours and five sixes before he was dismissed for 56 while his brother Akieni got 25. Opener Royan Fredericks showed promise, hitting three fours and two sixes but succumbed for 39; Extras contributed 49 as Javed Shafeek bagged 4-23 from eight overs, Jimol Marks 3-29 off 6.3 and Jason Heyliger 2-15. Left arm spinner Hemchand Persaud bowled well, although he failed to take a wicket, the spinner only conceded 10 runs from eight overs.
Savory was given the man-of-the-match and best batsman awards while Shafeek received the best bowler prize. Both teams took home trophies and cash prizes.
Managing Director of the Guyana Beverage Inc Robert Selman said he is happy to give back to the community and his company will continue to support the game in the area. Selman who stated that he will be returning to his native Trinidad and Tobago shortly, congratulated both teams and added that he is please to see his entity input bear fruits for Essequibo’s cricket where a number of players have gone on to play at higher levels.
Captain of the victorious East Bank Essequibo Ryan Hercules lauded the sponsors and thanked the fans for their support.
The South Essequibo Cricket Committee presented Coach Forbes Daniels and executive member Linden Daniels for their services rendered to the game over the years.
