Dear Editor,
The List is out for the Local Government elections and I am glad to see the number of young people that are contesting to serve on the various NDCs and municipalities across Guyana. However, I wish specifically to look at the candidates for the Georgetown Municipality and look at the APNU list of candidates for both the proportional representation and First Past the Post.
I am not sure that there is a true representation of youths within the APNU, for example almost all of the current councilors are contesting either as Party representative or constituency candidates. This is very disturbing. When I look at the Lodge area Martin Gaul AFC candidate did not get support from the coalition and so the young man decided to be part of an independent group. APNU decided through the PNC to put up one Monica Thomas who was a former citizen of Lodge and serves on the present council. According to my research, Ms. Thomas now resides in the Cummings Lodge area which I think falls under constituency 6 in the Municipality but she is going to represent Lodge. I want to encourage the people of Lodge to think wisely and make the right choice. Martin Gaul has lived all of his life in Lodge, he is young and can make a meaningful contribution to the citizens of Lodge and the council on a whole, so I would urge my young people especially to vote for Martin Gaul come 18 March, 2016. I am not campaigning for Mr. Gaul but I want people to be wise as a former resident of Lodge, I urge others to do so.
Mr. Editor there is need for new ideas, new energy and strategic thinking in the new council and while I believe that the past councilors might still have ideas and plans, I strongly believe that it is time for a new set of persons to serve. Another case is Mr. Oscar Clarke who would have served this country in various capacity even at the diplomatic level and is in the age group of the present Mayor Hamilton Green and had the opportunity to get into government at a very young age. He should not have been selected as a candidate but from the grapevine I understand the party is proposing him to be the next Mayor of Georgetown.
As I reflect on the present councilors who are seeking another term after being there for over twenty years, my attention is drawn to Ms. Patricia Chase- Green, a woman who I believe has done some work; this cannot be denied. However she has fortified herself to the extent that one of her close connections is one of the major contractors of the M&CC since he was given a contract worth over 20 Million dollars for the cleaning of the burial ground. In addition Ms. Chase- Green is very unhelpful in her attitude towards workers and sometimes forget she is a policy maker and not an administrator and I am convinced that her wanting to get back on the council is not for community or town development rather is for self-development.
Mr. Editor the electors must speak come 18 March, 2016. I know that they will come on the campaign trail with promises but they must tell people what have they done for citizens over the last twenty years as councilors, they must tell people why most of them ensure that their friends and families benefited through employment, contracts and other benefits.
I do believe just like how they needs to be a reshuffle in the administration of the council especially in the accounting section, there is need for new blood within the City Council of Georgetown. It is only in third world countries politician believes that they should hold on to office until they died or are removed by force or the ballot. This is a new dispensation and a time for new faces in the City Council. I am making sure that within my constituency that myself and family vote for young people who can have the opportunity to share their ideas and vision and have a chance in playing an integral role in the governing of our town. If I had the will power and means of spreading this message I would say to my voters it is time for a change please ensure we send out the old and bring in new blood.
I will be using the media and social network to let people understand that these folks after serving for twenty years should take a rest and I admire councilor Bourne who has decided that enough is enough, Oscar Clarke, Chase- Green, Randwell Jordan, and Mr. Garrett and others it is time for you to give a chance to fresh blood, you all had to learn so give other people a chance to learn.
