The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) will be receiving a $40 million RMB yuan (Guy $1.2B) military aid package, following the signing of relevant protocols between GDF Chief of Staff Brigadier General Mark Phillips
and Chinese ambassador, Zhang Limin.
The signing was done in the Conference Room at Defence Headquarters at Base Camp Ayanganna. The package will encompass the supply of heavy duty road building equipment and two patrol boats.
According to Phillips, the aid is to be utilised particularly in the recapitalisation of the GDF’s fourth Engineer Battalion, which is to be engaged in several infrastructure development works in the hinterland.
Thanking the government and people of China and the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), Phillips added that some of the material will enhance the capacity of the Coast Guard and boost its law enforcement capabilities in the Coastland and Riverain areas.
Brigadier Phillips also lauded the ongoing cooperation between the PLA and the GDF, saying that it exemplifies what true co-operation for development is all about.
Ambassador Zhang Limin indicated that China and the PLA were interested in continuing the friendly relations with Guyana and the GDF. He also expressed the hope that the relationship between the two countries and their militaries would continue to strengthen.
Also briefly discussed at the signing ceremony, was the possibility of the GDF and PLA collaborating on future infrastructural projects in Guyana’s hinterland.
Back in 2010, the GDF had also received a sizeable donation from China, including thousands of boots, helmets and bulletproof vests. At the time, this was handed over by then Chinese ambassador to Guyana, Yu Wenzhe to then Chief of Staff, Commodore Gary Best.
