A Canter lorry fetching a large quantity of containers filled with diesel was intercepted in the Corentyne back dam on Sunday night.
The vehicle was impounded and two men are in Police custody assisting with the investigations.
Reports said that the bust was made by security forces attached to GuySuco’s East Berbice operations.
The security men thought at first that the fuel had been stolen from GuySuco but later found that this was not the case. Rather, it could have been stolen from the pumping station at Black Bush Polder.’
The bust was made amidst reports that this type of activity was a racket which has been going on for some time.
Fuel sent to the pumping stations is routinely stolen, sometimes with the compliance of the persons who man these stations which are all in outlying areas.
Special Assistant to the Prime Minister in Region Six (East Berbice/Courentyne), Gobin Harbajhan, told Kaieteur News that he had been receiving such reports in the past weeks and had asked for investigations to be done.
He said, “Thanks to GuySuco we have intercepted such activity and I hope that apart from the two men arrested, that the Police could really find out who the masterminds are.”
The pumps located in outlying areas have been receiving supplies of fuel on a regular basis moreso since the commencement of the drought.
Regional Executive Officer of the Regional Democratic Council Dr. Veerasammy Ramayya disclosed yesterday that the RDC had over the past week sent some $35M in diesel and lubes to keep the pumps working given the prevailing weather conditions.
