Dear Editor,
As our 50th Independence anniversary quickly approaches and numerous upgrades and rehabilitation projects are being carried out in and around the city, one is left pondering as to what plans are in store for the University of Guyana. Being our only and supposedly premier tertiary institution in the country, complains of neglect and suffering seem to fall on deaf ears. What more has to be done for UG to get the very serious attention it deserves? It simply does not pay to attend the University in its current state. All of its programmes need to be reviewed and it is high time it started to cater to the needs of the Guyanese populace.
If the current government is serious about the youths of this country, they need to put an end to the injustice being meted out to the students as well as the staff there. It is highly unlikely that foreign investors coming to our shores would seriously consider putting someone in charge with just a degree from the institution. Those individuals who are aware that it makes no sense attending UG have opted to invest their money into internationally recognized programmes that can actually give them a boost in their career. Not everyone can afford such programmes so they unfortunately end up at UG.
End this misery. We deserve and demand a quality education! It is hoped that this time a properly qualified Guyanese can sit at the helm of this slowly but surely sinking ship and steer us towards progress. We need someone who understands the needs and dynamics of our society and can incorporate possible solutions and effective plans into the university’s curriculum to address those needs. A major overhaul and review of the entire management and administration structure is direly needed. Our UG is dying; does it need to completely die before someone actually takes notice and does something?
