Guyana’s health sector over the past 50 years has seen major achievements and laudable developments. It is only fitting that this is extensively highlighted when Guyana commences celebration of its 50th year
as an independent nation.
This was the primary focus of a Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO)-spearheaded forum convened on Monday.
It was disclosed that even as national preparations are being made, PAHO is streamlining its own plans to be part and parcel of this auspicious celebration. Guyana gained its Independence from British rule on May 26, 1966.
At Monday’s forum which was intended to enlighten media operatives about PAHO’s plans, Health Services Advisor Dr. Paul Edwards, revealed that PAHO’s input will be done in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health.
Regarding the half century celebration as a very important venture, he disclosed that the PAHO/WHO office made the decision to “capitalise on this opportunity to reflect, to compile and to present, on the achievements of the health sector.”
According to Dr. Edwards, the achievements and changes that Guyana realised over the years were supported by contributions in various forms, from different development agencies as well as key stakeholders, in collaboration with the Government of Guyana.
“This is the backdrop; this is the context as it relates to PAHO sitting down at the table and determining what would be our contribution to Guyana at 50,” Dr. Edwards announced.
Moreover, the Health Services Advisor, aided by a Power Point presentation, revealed that PAHO will be engaged in six specific activities. These are the development of a photo gallery book; a progress health report; the launch of both the photo gallery book and health report; a dinner to honour persons of outstanding contributions; a symposium to highlight the progress report and a health fair to be held in collaboration with the Public Health Ministry.
And according to Dr. Edwards, PAHO is looking to complete two key features of its contribution to the 50th celebration by mid-April 2016. These features are the photo gallery book and the progress health report which are slated to be launched on May 12, 2016 at the Guyana Marriott Hotel.
The Health Services Advisor disclosed that it is expected that in addition to those involved in the delivery of health care, the media will play a major role in gathering health information that showcase health developments over the past 50 years.
Dr. Edwards in his presentation on Monday considered that the first 25 years of health care delivery would undoubtedly reflect a challenging state of affairs when compared to the latter 25 years. He anticipates that the information that will be compiled will prove to be useful to many.
“It is envisioned that the report (that we are preparing) will benefit a wide array of persons including the current health sector, students and the public at large, as it will present a foundation that will inform development planning,” said Dr. Edwards.
Meanwhile, the dinner planned by PAHO will be held on the evening of May 12, also at the Marriott Hotel, while the symposium will be convened the following day at the Arthur Chung Convention Centre, Dr. Edwards informed.
In order to ensure that only the best product is produced in terms of its contributions to the independence celebration, Dr. Edwards disclosed that PAHO has taken on board “every single person in this organisation. We know that it is very challenging but we want the very best, so we are engaging everybody to make this a reality.”
PAHO’s planned contributions have already been endorsed by the Ministry of Public Health and the Department of Culture, Youth and Sport.
According to Dr. Edwards, “PAHO/WHO (Resident) Representative, Dr. (William) Adu-Krow has shared (our) plans with the Ministry of Public Health, including the Minister of Public Health. He and his team from this (PAHO) office have also met with Minister Nicolette Henry, the Minister within the Ministry of Education.”
Minister Henry is also the co-chairperson of the National Commemoration Commission which is tasked with planning for the independence celebration.
While the Commemoration Commission has been able to fit the PAHO activities into its independence celebration schedule, PAHO is expected to also have on its Planning Committee, at least, two officials from the Ministry of Public Health.
And as if the contributions already detailed are not enough, Dr. Edwards disclosed that PAHO will also be inviting its Director, who is based in Washington D. C., to travel to Guyana to be a part of the independence celebration. Also, past PAHO Representatives who would have worked in the Guyana office, during the period 1966–2016, will be on the PAHO’s list of invitees.
