Although City Mayor Hamilton Green has affirmed that the paid parking lot on the East Street tarmac across from the Georgetown Public Hospital will remain, there is a possibility that the cost to park vehicles in the lot might be reduced.
This comes in the wake of residents in the area appealing to authorities to have the paid parking lot removed.
Mayor Green said that the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) will be engaged in talks with the private contractor of the paid parking lot about a possible fee reduction.
The construction of the parking lot was done by the private contractor after a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed with the M&CC. The project is currently under discussion by the Ministry of Public Infrastructure and is still in its testing stage.
Persons desirous of using the newly constructed parking lot are now required to pay a fee of $360 for one hour of parking. There will then be an additional $300 every hour after.
According to the Mayor, the installation of the paid parking lot is a way of injecting some level of discipline to the public. It is also a means of encouraging citizens to obey traffic laws. Green has since revealed that the Council will be embarking on more projects of such nature in the Central Business District of the city, especially along Regent and Robb Streets.
Up to a month ago the tarmac was open to hospital staff, visitors and members of the public to park their vehicles. However, a controversy has been brewing ever since the M&CC refurbished the space under the Georgetown Restoration Project.
Since its existence, vehicle owners have been reluctant to use the parking lot. Motorists have resorted to parking their vehicles alongside the already narrow road causing traffic congestions during the busy weekdays.
Describing the move as un-democratic and dictatorial on the M&CC behalf, most residents in the area have been encouraging each other to boycott the parking lot.
Of recent, residents of East Street have written to the media venting disgust at the Council’s arbitrary move to implement the paid parking lot in the area. They have even appealed to the President to put an end to the paid parking lot.
The Council still sees the paid parking lot as a way of maintaining law and order and beautifying the city.
