Government has started consultation with local and international companies to produce special number plates for state-owned vehicles.
According to Minister of State, Joseph Harmon, during Wednesday’s post-Cabinet media briefing at the Ministry of the Presidency, the plates will have to carry special security features.
The CRG (Cooperative Republic of Guyana) number plates are being introduced to bring formality to state-owned vehicles and will serve for easy identification.
The move was prompted by current challenges faced by the Government in recovering state assets including vehicles, which were used by officials of the previous administration.
Harmon noted that Government received several proposals from local and international companies to produce the number plates.
“What we want to do is that once these plates are issued they will have some security features and these are the things we are doing now.”
He explained that a foreign company visited Guyana last week and met with officials, and another visit is scheduled for next week.
The new system will also make obsolete those vehicles that belong to the state, but which people are holding under private number plates.
All vehicles that will be purchased in the future for use by the state and state agencies will be fitted with the CRG registration.
Guyana has been dealing with vehicles’ theft and a number of other issues like change of color which are not recorded anywhere.
Currently, unless checks are made with the Guyana Revenue Authority, it is next to impossible to determine what vehicles belong to the state.
