A New Amsterdam resident is battling for his life in the Intensive Care Unit of the Georgetown Hospital after being brutally stabbed by a man who is now on the run.
The incident occurred on Saturday night outside the Wah Lin Restaurant at Lot 49 Stanleytown.
The injured man is Dwayne De Jonge, Called “Buda,” 27, of 229 M and TC Housing Scheme, New Amsterdam, Berbice.
His assailant has been named as Mark Bender, called ‘Tall Man’ of Lot 54 Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, Berbice.
According to De Jonge’s mother Yonette Yaw she was at home around 20:00 hrs when one of her son’s friends passed by and informed her that Dwayne was at the hospital “and he was stabbed bad.”
The woman said that she and her daughter immediately raced to the New Amsterdam Hospital where she saw her son lying on a bed. Yaw, who is a nurse, stated that her son bore several stab wounds.
He was taken for an X-ray and then the ICU, before being transferred around 01:00 hrs to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
In the interim, he received two units of blood. He also underwent surgery.
The grieving woman stated that the last information she got from her daughter was that one of the wounds pierced the liver and there was also injury to the lung.
According to an eye witness the issue started a few weeks ago due to some misunderstanding over a woman. Bender had reportedly injured one of De Jonge’s friends during that brawl. It was reported that the men had reportedly decided that they would let the issue rest after a number of persons had intervened.
But on Saturday, De Jonge ventured to the Stanleytown area to purchase some food when he encountered Bender. An argument ensued and Bender reportedly stabbed De Jonge. The injured man attempted to run, but fell and Bender ran behind him and stabbed him repeatedly.
The injured man subsequently got up and made it to a nearby shop before collapsing.
