The fate of Commissioner of the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC), Rickford Vieira, will
remain hanging for a while longer with a key report on his performance still to be submitted.
Vieira was sent on administrative leave early last month after the then Board of Directors, wrote Government, indicating that they had lost confidence in him.
GGMC is the state’s regulatory body that oversees the mining and extractive sectors, with the exception of forestry.
Questioned on Wednesday about the status of Vieira, Minister of Natural Resources, Raphael Trotman, disclosed that he is still to receive a performance evaluation report that was requested on the Commissioner.
Based on the report, Trotman will be making a recommendation of Vieira’s future to the Cabinet of Ministers. The report could be handed to the Minister by this month-end.
The life of the GGMC Board came to an end on December 31,with Government set to approve a new one next week, Trotman confirmed.
A few board members will remain to provide continuity, Trotman disclosed.
GGMC has been making the news in recent months after disclosures that all is not well in the mining and extractive sectors. A key report had slammed the entity, with miners complaining incessantly of problems not being addressing, especially regarding gold production.
The awarding of land, monitoring, landlordism, road conditions and concessions were among some of the major problems raised.
The stormy relationship between the previous board and Vieira became known with reports indicating that he clashed with them over several issues. He had reportedly objected to a $3B loan to Central Housing and Planning Authority, a transaction that raised legal questions.
Last month, Minister Trotman said the regulation of mining in Guyana is in a terrible state. “There is no denying that and steps have to be taken to clean it up if we are to move forward on a healthy footing.”
