-Bragging rights up for grabs in third place playoff
With all the participating teams left out of the Elite status grouping, today’s final in the 5th Annual Banks Beer Knockout Cup will no doubt bear much significance since the two finalists will be aiming to prove that their absence from the privileged consortium was a major omission.
Today at the National Stadium, West Ruimveldt-based Western Tigers will face Mocha-based Riddim Squad from 21:00hrs in what is anticipated to be a riveting contest between two teams that were clearly the best in the competition.
In the playoff for third place, Georgetown’s Santos FC tackle Berbice’s New Amsterdam United in a battle for bragging rights that should produce fireworks from 19:00 hrs.
The feature clash has all the hallmarks of a bruising affair with the Tigers form giving them the slight edge against a team that is no way short of determination.
The Tigers were impressive winners over NA United in their semi-final clash, beating them 3-0, while Riddim Squad after being held 1-1, before prevailing 3-2 in the penalty shootout.
The Georgetown unit has displayed ripping form to date, netting a fearsome thirteen goals from three matches and should this goal-scoring rampage continue then their opponents might find the going too tough to survive.
The lethal Randolph Wagner has been in terrific form, slamming in a tournament leading six goals, while the experienced trio of Dwayne Ali, Jamal Pedro and Darren Benjamin has contributed significantly.
To add to their offensive proficiency, their backline has been sturdy like the rock of Gibraltar, with one goal conceded so far so both on paper and performance the Tigers seems set to cart off the top prize.
However, Riddin Squad are no strangers to championship games, having made the final in 2012 when they lost so making amends will be the foremost on their minds..
They too are a potent team in offence, netting nine times from three matches with the Hope siblings Sceyon and Sheldon along with Teon Jones featuring significantly.
Sceyon has three goals, while Sheldon and Jones have so far contributed two apiece.
They too have been solid defensively, allowing a mere two goals to breach their defence so the two teams appear strong on both ends of the field so it could come down to which team creates more chances to score.
On the defensive end, the Mocha unit has the second best recorded record as they have shipped in two goals in their three matches.
The Santos versus New Amsterdam United affair should be a good contest.
Both teams have looked strong both defensively and in attack and it could come down to which one bury their chances.
United Jamal Butts has scored three times along with two strikes from Delroy Ferdinand and Keon Williams and they have all shown impressive skill so Santos backline will have to be wary of their offensive abilities.
For Santos, Dwayne McLean, Andy Parvantan and Travis Fitzpatrick have been the leading marksmen with two goals apiece and they are expected once again to lead the charge for the third spot.
The winning team will take home $2 million and the championship trophy, while the second, third and fourth place finishers will collect $1million, $500,000 and $250,000 respectively along with trophies.
LISTEN HOW JAGDEO WILL MAKE ALL GUYANESE RICH!!!
