On October 2, 2010, a headless and partially decomposed body was found in a suitcase at Emerald Tower Resort. It was later identified as 16-year-old Queen’s College student, Neesa Lalita Gopaul.
The discovery was made a week after the teen’s mother, Bibi Shareema Gopaul, had filed a missing person report.
Five years later and thanks to the diligent work of several detectives within the Guyana Police Force (GPF), the teen’s mother and step father, Barry Jarvis Small were jointly charged for the brutal murder.
They were sentenced to a combined 202 years in jail last March.
To show the cops that their hard work did not go unnoticed, a member of the public presented each officer with a plaque during the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) annual Christmas Luncheon and awards ceremony which was held at Eve Leary last Monday.
Those who were honoured for working diligently in this case were Detective Lance Corporal Germain Landry, Assistant Commissioner Marlon Chapman, Assistant Superintendent Mitchell Caesar, Superintendent H. Jessamy and Superintendent J. David.
The officers expressed their appreciation after receiving the plaque which they claim will always be there to remind them about their hard work and dedication to which is said to be one of the most high profile cases.
