A Better Hope resident was remanded to jail yesterday after he pleaded not guilty to a charge of unlawful
possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition, when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
It is alleged that 25-year-old Mohan Chandrajit, a carpenter, who resides at Better Hope, East Coast Demerara, had a .38 pistol in his possession when he was not the holder of a firearm licence. It was further alleged that on the same day, he had two rounds of .38 ammunition in his possession.
Chandrajit was found with the items at Westminster, West Bank Demerara.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges and was remanded to prison until December 28. The matter was transferred to the Wales Magistrate’s Court.
Police Prosecutor, Corporal Deniro Jones told the court that the police raided a property at Westminster and found the items stashed in a room. He stated that the defendant is the owner of the property and the illegal items were found in his presence. Jones added Chandrajit admitted, under caution, that he was the owner of the gun and ammunition.
The prosecutor disclosed that there are two witnesses that have seen the defendant with the illegal gun.
An attorney for the defendant asked that his client be granted bail in a reasonable sum. The lawyer acknowledged that he is aware that special circumstances must be provided for bail to be granted.
The lawyer explained that his client is not the owner of the property and was not in possession or control of the items. He said that the property in which the articles were recovered is under construction. The attorney argued that several persons have access to the building.
Further, Chandrajit’s attorney explained that at the time of the police search his client was merely doing work on the building. He stated that his client along with four of his workmates was arrested after the gun find. According to the Attorney, the other persons were released on station bail.
After listening to the submissions made by both parties, the Magistrate remanded Chandrajit to prison after pointing out that no special reasons were put forward by his lawyer.
