An alert female detective is being commended by the hierarchy of the Guyana Police Force after she was able to keep her cool and nab a drug dealer in minibus, Friday morning, on the Corentyne.
Sheldon Simon, 45, a painter who gave his address as Sheet Anchor, East Canje Berbice and Ferry Street New Amsterdam, is now behind bars in the New Amsterdam prison. He appeared before Magistrate Charlyn Artiga in the No. 51 Magistrate’s Court on a charge of Possession of Narcotics for the purpose of trafficking and was refused bail.
According to Prosecutor Sergeant Bernard Brown, the police officer was on her way to work when she boarded a Number 63 minibus which was heading further up the Corentyne. After a short while upon entering the bus, the officer was struck by a strong strange odour.
She quickly realized that it was marijuana. Without arousing suspicion she observed that the smell was coming from a male passenger who had a black haversack on his lap.
The female officer kept her cool and without making an alarm, upon approaching the Springlands Police Station she ordered the driver to drive into the station compound, where Simon was arrested and he and the bag were taken into custody.
Upon inspection it was observed that the haversack contained six black taped plastic bags. The contents were checked and tested and was found to be five kilograms, 470 grams of compressed marijuana.
Simon was subsequently charged and remanded to jail. The case is set to continue on December 23, at the Springlands Magistrate Court.
