The Ministry of Education was given a boost in its capacity to broadcast to the masses when the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) handed over 59 television sets on Thursday.
Commissioner-General of the GRA, Khurshid Sattaur, was present at the ceremonial handing over of the 21-inch Westinghouse sets to the Ministry of Education’s Permanent Secretary, Delma Nedd. Also present was Chief Education Officer, Olato Sam and Assistant Chief Education Officer, Baydewan Rambarran.
According to GRA, the ceremony was held at GRA’s Camp Street Headquarters.
“The handing over is in keeping with the GRA’s corporate social responsibility which Mr. Sattaur noted is keen on assisting with, but not limited to education programmes that require the use of audio and video materials. It should be noted, that the acquisition of the television sets was as a result of the successful efforts by the GRA’s Law Enforcement and Investigation Division (LEID)’s anti-smuggling activities.”
GRA disclosed that under these circumstances, the Commissioner-General is empowered to use his discretion where disposing of assets in the best suitable manner is concerned.
“It is hoped that the use of this medium to educate students and teachers alike will be highly appreciated,” Sattaur said.
A list of the schools that will be receiving the TV sets has already been prepared, according to the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary. Included on the list are schools in the remote areas.
“Today, with the donation of 59 television sets from the Guyana Revenue Authority, more of our students will be able to access our Guyana Learning Channel…When we heard about the donation, we already put together names of schools,” Nedd explained.
Asked whether consideration will be given for a slot on the Learning Channel to incorporate tax education, the Chief Education Officer in an invited comment concurred, since he believes such a broadcast will be appropriate for students who pursue studies in Accounting and Business Management.
Since the GRA currently produces its own weekly sensitization programmes ‘Focus on GRA’ and “Let’s Talk Tax,” Manager in the GRA’s Public Relations Department, Melissa Baird, said the television sets will provide the perfect opportunity for a wide section of school-aged Guyanese to follow the developments within the Revenue Authority.
She used the opportunity to implore teachers at the various schools to encourage their students to pay keen interest in the GRA’s public awareness activities.
In 2010, 15 TV sets were donated by the GRA to the Ministry of Education through a similar arrangement.
