The Minor league 10/10 softball cricket tournament sponsored by Rohan’s Furniture Establishment, Parboo’s General Store and Promoter Nigel and organized by the Guyana Softball League (GSL) started on a bright note over last weekend with some scintillating play by the youngsters far beyond their years.
The tournament was opened by the President of the GSL Halim Khan and in his remarks reminded the teams and representatives that their attitude will determine their altitude not only in the game of cricket but in everything they do be it academics or those inclined to sports.
In order for any player or team to forge a name for themselves, sacrifices must be made by all. Youth Coordinator Prem Persaud said that this is the first of the many initiatives to come from the GSL.
“Our expectations from schools and the representatives who are teachers of the various schools that the discipline of the teams is a direct result of what they themselves instill in the students,” Persaud added.
Khan exhorted the schools to interact with the others, always show respect for the game and learn the regulations which is at their disposal.
The first game was an exhibition match between Cornelia Ida (CI) and Leonora Primary. Both teams and their supporters erupted with glee as the contest ebbed and flowed before CI won by five wickets with three balls to spare.
Leonora Primary School batted first and reached 69-6 in 10 overs with Aryan Batool top scoring with 14. CI, whose strength is their bowling, were indebted to Irfan Hussein 2-10 and Keshan Sugrim with 2-2 in one over.
CI started brightly with female batter Varuni Pitamber playing sensibly and putting away the bad balls, but once she was run out, the tempo slowed and CI were only able to achieve their target through overthrows due to some poor fielding.
In the opening match of the tournament Leonora Primary defeated Tuschen Primary after electing to bat and were off to a ‘flyer’ with Renaldo Scotten using his strength to muscle the bowling as the Leonora bowlers had no answer to his onslaught.
But with his score on 35 decorated with six boundaries, a wonderful piece of fielding by the skipper Aryan Persaud resulted in him being run out to change the complexion of the game and limit Tuschen to 90-9 in 10 overs.
Leonora’ Skipper led from the front by snapping up 2-14 from his 2 overs and Leonora began their run chase Persaud returned with the bat and showed his players how it is done with a responsible unbeaten 35 with two sixes and a four to his lead his team to victory.
Leonora Primary achieved their target, scoring 92-5 in 9.2 overs.
The next round is slated for Saturday from 09:00 when Uitvlugt Primary face-off with Greenwich Park Primary and CI play Meten-Meer-Zorg Primary.
