The Port Mourant Training Centre (PMTC) Alumni Volleyball Club participated for the first time in the UWI Pelican Volleyball Invitational Tournament 2015 which was held at the Mona Campus, Kingston, Jamaica
from Nov.20th -22nd.
The tournament attracted six male teams and six female teams. The males teams that participated were – UWI ‘A’, UWI ‘B’, PMTC, UTECH, Venus All Stars and Vikings.
The female teams that took part were UWI ‘A’, UWI ‘B’, Blackbirds, V/Queens, CBB and G. C. FOSTER.
The preliminary segment was played on a round robin basis and was contested on Friday 20th and Saturday 21st, while the semi-finals and finals were played on Sunday22nd.
After the preliminaries on Saturday PMTC was second in the standings having lost only to UWI A.
In their semi final on Sunday, PMTC came up against Vikings and after taking the first game, lost a close battle by a (2-1) 25-21, 20-25, 9-15 margin. In the other semifinal UWI A defeated VENUS ALL STARS 2-1 in another close matchup with the scores being 25-17, 23-25 and 15-13.
In a hard fought final UWI ‘A’ triumphed over VIKINGS (3-1) with the scores being 25-23, 22-25, 34-32 and 26-24.
The female final was also hotly contested with G.C. FOSTER squeezing past UWI A (3-2) in a lengthy five setter with the final scores being.17-25, 26-24, 24-26, 31-29, 15-13.
At the presentation ceremony which was held after the male final, Quacy Matheson of PMTC received the Best outside Hitter trophy, while Trevlon McRae also of PMTC received the Best Middle Blocker trophy.
All of the participants and officials received souvenir UWI Pelican Volleyball 10th Anniversary Bags.
Head Coach of the PMTC team, Levi Nedd in an invited comment stated that – “I am pleased with the performance of my team, we could have done better but for some biased refereeing in the semi-final that took its toll on the young players.” He further added, “Just coming to Jamaica was an achievement and the way we played against more seasoned opponents was commendable for such a young team, and augurs well for the future.”
The PMTC team took the opportunity to thank the UWI Pelican team and presented tokens of appreciation to the organizers. The trip to Jamaica was made possible through the assistance and kind sponsorship of the Ministry of Education, RDC Region #6, Guysuco, A. Ally & Sons General Store, Ansa McAl, M& M Snackette, Sain Supermarket, Poonai’s Pharmacy, Spready’s Bakery, Fly Jamaica and other well wishers. (Samuel Whyte)
