A 31-year-old Mabaruma, North West District woman died at around 02.00 hrs yesterday after giving birth to her thirteenth child, in an area far away from any medical services.
Viola La Cruz succumbed at a cousin’s home at Salem, Parika Backdam, Essequibo, some hours after her mother helped her to deliver a girl. A relative stated that La Cruz, who has five other daughters and seven sons, had suffered from hypertension.
The baby was taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital. Indications are that the child is healthy and that there were no complications during the delivery.
According to a relative, La Cruz was transferred from the Mabaruma Hospital to a city hospital some time ago in an advanced stage of pregnancy. However, she later went to stay at the Amerindian Hostel after being told that she had not reached time for delivery.
But a relative said that because she had travelled from the interior without any money or clothing, the mother of 12 went to stay at her relative’s Salem, Parika Backdam home.
Sometime on Wednesday night, Viola La Cruz showed signs that she was ready to give birth.
Her mother, Mary La Cruz, who had done several home deliveries, was present and assisted her in what was reportedly an uncomplicated delivery.
“She was okay. I deliver she last (Wednesday) night and she was okay,” a distraught Mrs. La Cruz said.
“But afterwards she feel pain. She say ‘mommy, me back hurting me bad,’ and when I go outside to wash, me grand-daughter holler and say ‘granny, granny, auntie looking bad,’ but she (Viola La Cruz) still calling for me, and then she pass away.”
The body was transported to the West Bank Demerara Regional Hospital yesterday afternoon and then taken to the Ezekiel Funeral Home.
