The Executive Committee of the Bag Bay Inc. (BBI) was in glee following the announcement by the Ministry of the Presidency of a ban on ‘Styrofoam’ products. The ban takes effect from January 2016.
This Organisation has for years been calling for a ban on Styrofoam and plastics since they hurt our environment in a significant way. Efforts to engage Minister Robert Persaud (the then Minister of Agriculture) to allow duty-free concessions on the importation of alternative materials did not succeed.
“Our Organisation was also recently denied approval of ‘start-up funds’ to have this business up and running.
“We never gave up hope and today we continue to lend our support to those promoting the use of food containers made of alternative materials that are more eco-friendly, and to direct our efforts towards the promotion of a clean and green Guyana that could now bask in the sunshine and banish memories of floods caused by the unusual disposal of styrofoam and plastics.
“We look forward to welcoming yet another New Day which we hope is now in the making – the Ban on Plastic Shopping Bags,” said the Bag Bay Inc executive.
The Bag Bay Inc. supports all groups interested in working together to promote a cleaner and healthier environment, it added.
