The local chapter of International Children’s Outreach is at it again. This time, the organization is embarking on a food distribution exercise in communities along the East Bank Demerara corridor.
A large number of food hampers comprising canned tuna, sausages, macaroni and ramen noodles among other necessary kitchen ingredients has already been handed out to less fortunate families.
As part of a wider project, ICO-Guyana will be handing out at least 75 substantial food hampers on a monthly basis. This initiative is expected to see massive growth within the coming months.
Apart from this, the organization, headed by Guyana-born Onica Charles of the USA, is set to host in excess of a dozen students from Florida International University.
The purpose of their week-long visit to Guyana, set for early next year, is to execute a number of workshops aimed at talking to, and later crafting a strategy for catering to the needs of vulnerable children burdened with the pressures of society.
This will play into some of the services set to be offered by the ICO’s community centre, which is currently under construction at Craig on the East Bank of Demerara.
Additionally, the organization is currently working along with a few government schools to assist children preparing for Spelling Bees and Debating Competitions.
In addition to a massively successful Back- to-school event held in August of this year, ICO was also able to give a spectacular makeover to the previously unused basketball court at the St. Ann’s Orphanage located on Thomas Street in Georgetown.
In the meantime, the organisation has extended an invitation to persons who are interested in volunteering for the project.
ICO’s Public Relations Officers, Rehana Ashley Ahmad has noted that since the Guyana Chapter of the organization is relatively new, a major focus at this point is to expand on the number of volunteers that it has, so that more work can be done.
