Swift action by a West Berbice farmer led to the recovery of six of her sheep which were stolen on Monday night.
According to the farmer, Mrs. Gordon of Number Twenty-eight Village, West Coast Berbice, all of her animals were put into the pen on Monday afternoon, but on Tuesday morning she observed that all was not well; six of her animals were missing. She quickly set out to find the animals. The effort took the farmer to the home of a man who is known to be buying animals on the East Coast Demerara. The farmer, after recognizing her animals confronted the individual who offered to settle the matter with her.
The farmer subsequently returned to the businessman, this time accompanied by the police, however, the businessman showed them a clean pair of heels. The animals were taken back to West Berbice, and are now at the Fort Wellington Police Station.
The police are also seeking another individual from West Coast Berbice, whom they believe can assist in their investigations.
Rustling has been quite a challenge for livestock farmers in recent times. Agriculture Minister, Noel Holder on Sunday last, speaking at the West Berbice Sheep and Goat Farmers Association exhibition, acknowledged the problem. He assured farmers that help is on the way from Government.
