Recognizing the importance of putting an end to the high percentage of women being diagnosed with breast cancer, a newly formed cancer organization will be offering free mammograms to underprivileged women countrywide.
The organization will be partnering with several businesses to have the mammograms done at the Cancer Institute of Guyana at reduced prices.
A mammogram is an X-ray examination of the breast. It is used to detect and diagnose breast disease in women.
Every year, dozens of women are diagnosed with breast cancer across the country. Some of whom eventually die.
The month of October is dedicated annually to raising awareness of the deadly disease.
Each year, Non-Governmental Organizations and other institutions would normally team up to spread awareness throughout the country.
In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the cancer organization will ensure four uninsured and low-income women receive a free examination at the Cancer Institution of Guyana. This offer will last until December.
The organization cannot be named as yet because the President, Bibi Saeedah Akhtar Hassan, is still completing the final process of establishing the NGO.
“The legal process will be completed by this month end, but because it is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we wanted to do something,” the NGO’s President said.
According to Hassan, for the past 10 years, she voluntarily worked with a cancer organization. After that entity closed its door, with the help of a friend, she decided to continue to offer support to cancer victims.
“We are going to educate persons on cancer. We will be dealing with the three main types of cancer– prostate, breast and cervical. We will also be raising funds to assist these persons,” Hassan stated.
On October 30, there will be breast cancer awareness walk starting from Parade Ground at 06:00 hrs and a “wear pink day” on October 31.
