The Georgetown Green Volunteer Corps initiated by the Mayor and City Council of Georgetown, (M&CC) has commenced cleaning of all the community recreational grounds located in the City.
The group cleaned Roxanne Burnham Gardens and East Ruimveldt community playgrounds.
Group members involved in the activity comprised private citizens and the business community. The group removed overgrowths of bush from these grounds. It is estimated that $500,000 was expended to clear both playgrounds.
The monies expended were taken from the Council’s coffers. According to information released by the Council, many parks and other recreational facilities in Georgetown have been neglected for many years due to a lack of funds. The council has outlined that over the years some of the recreational facilities were handed over to community groups for management but many of these groups have become defunct.
As a result, the committee noted that the grounds could not be cleaned and maintained. The Council therefore underlined the need for restoration of all play grounds and parks.
“The provision of recreational ground in various communities has a number of social, economic and health benefits for the populace. The parks and community grounds promote social cohesion and encourage youth involvement in sport. Also, a well-kept park in a community increases the value of properties in the neighbourhood.”
Town Clerk, Royston King, had promised that the “Green Volunteer Corps would give citizens the opportunity to be a part of the restoration and transformation process in the city”.
The Council has since resuscitated its sport and culture group which was dormant for many years.
Last month, the M&CC commenced a project to reclaim its verges, parapets and other open spaces in Georgetown.
Since then, the municipality is working assiduously to clean and clear all recreational parks and grounds under its control.
