Dear Editor,
In view of all the corruption and abundance of dishonest, underhand carryings- on in Guyana, I am immediately forced to bring to mind, though somewhat reluctantly, the ancient Greek philosopher Diogenes.
In full and broad daylight, Diogenes could be seen strolling the streets of Athens, on a cloudless sunlit day carrying a brightly lit torch. On being questioned as to why he went about with a lamp in broad daylight, Diogenes confessed, I am looking for an honest man.
He looked for a human being but reputedly found nothing but rascals and scoundrels. No one matched the description.
It is reported that Alexander the Great once said, “Had I not been Alexander, I should have liked to be Diogenes.” Once, while Diogenes was sunning himself, Alexander came up to him and offered to grant him any request. “Stand out of my light,” he replied. Please do not for one moment jump to the assumption that contrary to Diogenesian philosophy I am not alluding to the fact that all the politicians in Guyana are corrupt. However, I can unequivocally state that there seems to be a dearth of trustworthy ones.
The populace has gradually come to realize that not all talk leads to action and again talk is cheap. Some of the pre-election grandiose promises have failed to materialize, and the coalition has now been transformed into coals on the nation.
Basically and plainly put in Guyanese vernacular: you get what you want, and now you don’t want what you get”. Yes we did not like how the P.P.P lied and cooked the books, or how the party was inundated with crooks, but now you have had your voice and the APNU/ AFC was the resounding choice. Remember that politics determine who has the power not who has the truth.
It was Albert Einstein who said thus: “Whoever is careless with the truth in small matters cannot be trusted with important matters.”
Are we any way nearer to where we need to go? Can Post-election progress be charted in a tangible and significant course?
Seemingly the people are still drifting. However, the truth be told this is a question that the voters must ask themselves.
A recent editorial ( K.N September 3, 2105) pointed out the fact that the State has failed to generate sufficient improvements to improve the life of the masses.
Is the Augean stables of corruption taking too long to be cleaned up, or has the present Government lent credence to Diogenes search?
Yvonne Sam.
