Alleged burglar, Anfernee Cantzlaar, who told the court that he was badly beaten by a mob, was on Monday remanded to prison after he was accused breaking into a house with intent to commit a felony.
Twenty-year-old, Cantzlaar, who appeared badly wounded, had to be assisted with standing when his name was called by the court orderly.
The defendant of 259 East Ruimveldt, Georgetown denied that on August 28, at South Ruimveldt, he broke and entered the dwelling house of Natasha Robinson with the intent to steal.
City Magistrate Ann Mc Lennan read the charge to him when he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts. Police Prosecutor, Sergeant Neville Jeffers, in relating the facts told the court that on the day in question, the victim secured her home and retired to bed around 20:30 hours.
He added that minutes later the woman was awaken by noise coming from the lower flat of the building.
The court was told that Robinson awoke her sister and ventured to the lower flat, where they saw the defendant.
An alarm was raised and Cantzlaar was apprehended by the victim’s brother-in-law and public-spirited citizen.
The Prosecutor stressed that the man came about his injuries after residents’ effort to restrain him.
When given a chance to explain his side of the story, the defendant told the court that on Friday, he was exercising when a white bus pulled up beside him. He added that the occupants began inquiring about the whereabouts of some boys.
Cantzlaar noted that after he was unable to provide them with the information, the occupants exited the bus and dealt him some blows about the body with a piece of wood. He alleged that his attackers threw him into a van, in which the beatings continued.
The defendant claimed that he was later taken to a house behind South Ruimveldt, where he was tied up and further beaten.
After listening to submissions from both sides, the Magistrate remanded Cantzlaar to prison and ordered that he return to court on September 11, when he will face Magistrate Alex Moore.
