The Mayor and Councillors of the City of Georgetown, (M&CC) is expected to commence work under its “Green, Clean City concept.”
According to M&CC Public Relations Officer Debra Lewis, the programme, which was introduced by Town Clerk Royston King, will seek to promote efforts, leading to the development and enhancement of the general aesthetics of the city.
Lewis said that a new standard of cleanliness would be achieved through the initiative which involves, tree-planting exercises, refurbishing of parapets and verges, reduction of wanton disposal of waste environmental and maintenance of the drainage system.
According to Lewis, every person who lives and works within the precincts of Georgetown is expected to be a part of this programme.
“This programme will span every sector of society and would have a managerial and custodian component.”
Therefore, the Council is anticipating that all registered itinerant vendors will cooperate with the Municipality in raising awareness of the “Green, Clean City”.
“The vendor’s project is expected to improve the aesthetics in which they operate, make their business more attractive, marketable and, simultaneously promoting a Green, Clean City concept,” Lewis added.
Regent Street vendors are expected to meet with members of the council at 09:00 hours today, to discuss their involvement in the programme.
Meanwhile, M&CC officials also noted that massive drainage works in several wards in the city have commenced.
According to information disseminated by council, parapets and verges have been cleaned and manicured and the street drains along Carmichael and Main Streets in Georgetown have been desilted.
Additionally, cleaning and desilting of drains has also commenced in West Ruimveldt, Ruimveldt, Kingston and Agricola. Efforts are expected to intensify as drainage work continues. Workers are scheduled to be deployed to the Mc Doom and Houston areas.
The Council has noted that it will embark on a massive maintenance programme subsequent to the drainage exercise.
