“When drivers are caught and we show them a replay, they say ‘Oh My God, I never knew the cameras were working” – Acting Traffic Chief
By Romila Boodram
Police have charged over 600 drivers for running red lights in and around the city for the year so far.
Surprisingly, what many people are learning is that the drivers were nabbed after their “unlawful act” was recorded on closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras which are located in the city, on the East Bank Demerara and certain parts on the East Coast Demerara.
This was disclosed by Acting Traffic Chief, Superintendent Dion Moore, during an interview yesterday.
He also explained that the cameras are being monitored by police on a daily basis at the National Intelligence Centre, located in the Castellani House compound.
“The persons, who are violators of intersections and junctions where cameras are placed, will not see the police when they are monitoring the cameras, but as long as they commit a breach, the police will know through our internal system, the acting Traffic Chief revealed.
So far, 667 persons were arrested and placed before the court for breach of traffic light control in several areas.
Superintendent Moore stated that once someone has been caught violating the traffic signals, the police will first try to locate that person and a replay of the footage will be played to them.
“When drivers are caught, they say, ‘Oh My God I never knew the cameras were working,’” Moore revealed.
Kaieteur News understands that there are some 40 sites around the city with about three or four active cameras at each site.
The cameras were erected to combat criminal activity
Meanwhile, with respect to speeding, Moore urges drivers not to speed and also for those who are in vehicles driven by irresponsible users to speak out.
“Leave early so that you can meet there early. There is no where you can leave late and reached early,” the Superintendant advises.
