Linden’s Victory Valley Royals blew away Georgetown’s renowned Dyna’s Ravens Sunday night at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, which continued an impressive showing from Linden teams in Guyana’s Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) inaugural Forbes Burnham Memorial Championships.
Royals held Ravens to nine points while scoring 25 points in the final quarter to ensure the exit of one of the favourite teams in the knockout tournament. Royals downed Ravens 70-49 after the score was 45-40 in their favour going into the final period.
Royals ‘balled’ to a 10-2 run in the first six minutes of the game to set up their huge first round victory in the competition. Royals’ defensive pressure in the closing period proved to be one of their biggest assets down the stretch as they forced countless turnovers.
Harold Adams scored 22 points while Lawrence DaCosta scored 17 points and Orlan Glasgow 16 points for Royals, which will play Colts, who won Saturday night in a semi-final game at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Ryan Stephney had 13 points for Ravens with Ryan Gullen and Dominic Vicente adding 10 and nine points respectively. Ravens took the early lead 11-9 in the first quarter before Royals returned for a 28-27 advantage at halftime.
Chris Williams led offensive for Royals with seven points in the period. Royals placed the clamp on Ravens in the pivotal third period, scoring 17 points while enforcing a stranglehold to restrict Ravens to 13 points.
In the opening game, Pacesetters bounced into the semi-final beating Retrieve Raiders 79-49. Royston Siland top scored in the win with 13 points while the next best scorer was Jaleel Duke with 12 points.
For Raiders, Neil Marks scored 10 points while Deuel Garner scored nine points.
Pacesetters took control of the game 16-5 in the first period. Raiders battled back in the second period, but it was not enough to catch Pacesetters. With the scores at 52-42 at the end of the third period, Pacesetters scored 27 points opposed to Raiders seven points to seal the win.
Pacesetters will play Half Mile Bulls, which upstaged Guardians in the semi-final round.
